Cover crops provide many practical benefits for farmers, helping to generate resilient soil and provide natural solutions to issues such as pests, soil nutrient depletion, and weed control.

Thanks to all who came out for our Farmer-to-Farme Thanks to all who came out for our Farmer-to-Farmer field tour on Thursday!

We visited Tecarte Farms and @emmaleafarms to share ideas on regenerative practices, soil health and how to support pollinators on our farming landscapes.

Kevin Husband, Katie Leek and Jack Bates shared techniques that have delivered encouraging results on their operations. Lots of discussion on the issues and solutions that are working in our own community.

More information to come on Grassland Set-Asides, cover crops, floral margins and cost-share support for each practice.

Happy International Women's Day! Did you know tha Happy International Women's Day!

Did you know that British Columbia has the highest percentage of female farm operators in Canada, at 39.7%? Katie Leek of Emma Lea Farms is a prominent female farm operator and a DFWT board member.

Running a farm is no easy feat, requiring quick decision making and adaptation. But being able to connect with other women in this industry to share information and support each other is one of the things Katie values most.

With five generations of farming history, Katie has always been involved with Emma Lea Farms, starting as a seasonal worker, before joining the operation full time in 2011. Now, Katie manages the farm market, u-pick operation, beef cattle, and laying hens. She also helps to educate the public on sustainable and local farming practices through social media, field trips, and farm tours. By prioritizing soil-based agriculture Katie plans to continue her work at Emma Lea for generations to come.

Outside of work, Katie enjoys spending time with her two sons, as well as with their pet dog and horse. Growing up on Westham Island fueled Katies love of nature and birds, especially the Mallard Drake, which became her favorite bird after watching flocks of ducks flying into the fields from the marsh after sunset. Her interest in wild birds and farming has inspired Katie to help create a balance between farming and wildlife in the Fraser Delta.

Taking inspiration from her grandfather, who was a founding director of the BC Waterfowl Society, Katie is a director for the Delta Farmers Institute as well as for Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust. With her passion for agriculture stewardship, she is excited to see what the future holds for DF&WT.

During Women’s History Month, we are proud to celebrate women like Katie in the farming community! #internationalwomensday #womeninfarming
Conducting routine soil tests is the best way to c Conducting routine soil tests is the best way to collect information on how soil properties change and adapt to new management practices, but soil changes slowly over time.

In the fall, we were joined by Provincial Soil Specialist Dieter Geesing, who showed us several techniques to monitor the health of farm soil. To observe the physical properties of soil, tools such as a soil colour chart (picture 2) and a soil stability test kit (picture 3) are used, while other properties are further assessed in a soil lab.

We hope to gain insight into long-term changes resulting from regenerative practices by incorporating soil analysis into our annual monitoring efforts. @AAFC_Canada #CdnAgPartnership
We would like to extend an invitation to local fie We would like to extend an invitation to local field vegetable and blueberry operators who are interested in enhancing soil health and supporting pollinators on their farms.

Hear from other farmers about their experience with cover crops, grassland set asides with a pollinator focus, and other unique approaches to attracting pollinators to the farm, all while building soil health. We will also be providing information on funding porgrams for 2023.

Jack Bates will discuss the value of pollinator-focused GLSAs for Tecarte Farms.
Kevin Husband of Emma Lea Farms will talk about a unique approach with sunflowers and cover crops.

Limited spots are available, RSVP by contacting DF&WT at: dfwt@dccnet.com or 604-940-3392
Today marks 30 years for the Delta Farmland and Wi Today marks 30 years for the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust!

We're so thrilled to share this milestone with all of our farm cooperators, funders and the community we serve. From nurturing the soil to creating habitats for our feathered friends, we've been spreading our wings and soaring to new heights year after year. Here's to the next 30 years of farming with the birds!

A note from our Chair David Bradbeer on this milestone occasion.

The Trust helped unify farmers and wildlife conservationists to deliver critically needed habitat initiatives on the Fraser River delta. When I joined the Trust in 2007, the programs were already supporting a collaborative model of farmland stewardship and helped share the cost of providing grassland habitat to a suite of migratory birds, including several species listed under Canada’s Species at Risk Act. Over the years I’ve been privileged to watch the Trust grow its programs and expand the ecosystem services they provide. At the same time, I’ve watched as the Trust's research programs have matured, with many collaborative projects underway with government agencies and post-secondary institutions. The 30 year history of the Trust is a testament to it’s collaborative model of farmland stewardship.

Calling all farmers! We have built a new tool to t Calling all farmers! We have built a new tool to track waterfowl activity in Delta and Richmond.

How does it work?
When you see a flock in your field, answer a few questions through a form on our website. Sightings will then be shared on a map.

Please note this map does not offer real-time information and cannot be used to locate waterfowl.

This citizen science tool will help incorporate farmers' direct experiences into our waterfowl research in Richmond and Delta.

For more information about our research projects or to report a sighting, visit the link in our bio.

The DF&WT Winter Cover Crop program helps farmers to establish a vegetative cover on their fields over winter to help protect the soil and provide feeding habitat for waterfowl.
